$afety Deposit Box

Sun, 25 Oct, 1:00 am ACDT

Adelaide · Check price with organiser

'$afety Deposit Box' by Good New$ Bank (Cassie Thring and Nicholas Hanisch), is a playful, layered installation created for the Bentham Street Gallery. Riffing on the Bentham Street Gallery as literal safety deposit boxes, Good New$ Bank uses familiar signifiers of wealth—fat stacks of cash, diamond rings—a dose of humour, in‑jokes and hidden symbols to ask "What does our community value?" These artworks highlight the tension between outward displays of wealth and the poignancy of sentimental, treasured objects. Visitors are encouraged to scan the QR code by the galleries to contribute to the growing Good New$ database, a participatory archive of what people choose to value and why. Nicholas Hanisch and Cassie Thring's collaborative practice, Good New$ Bank, is a hopeful resistance to cynicism: bored with widespread nihilism, they imagine communities where good news is valued above all. Their work explores how society measures success and wealth and proposes an alternative through art. Presented by the City of Adelaide in collaboration with Good New$ Bank, Exhibition Studios and Karl Meyer.

Sophie Hyde’s Oyster Project

Sun, 25 Oct, 7:00 am ACDT

Adelaide · Check price with organiser

As part of the development for a new film project, acclaimed director Sophie Hyde (Good Luck to you Leo Grande, Jimpa) is exploring the work of local scientists and underwater cinematographers who are recording the impacts of the algal bloom on the South Australian coastline and working to build new oyster reefs that will support the recovery of affected areas. Part of this research is testing ways of presenting the underwater experience visually and aurally, helping audiences connect with the beauty, complexity and devastation beneath the surface. Working alongside the Great Southern Reef Foundation, marine restoration scientist Dr Dominic McAfee (Adelaide University) and other artists, Sophie will use her time in the pod to explore how to show the destruction and regeneration in the context of a cinematic work. She will also further interrogate how her fictional characters and story will develop alongside the real-world elements. Part of Nature Festival 2026

Stephanie Doddridge: Tools for Quiet Activism

Sun, 25 Oct, 10:00 am ACDT

Adelaide · Free admission

'Tools for Quiet Activism' explores grassroots ecological restoration, drawing inspiration from the work of scientist-led organisation Bio·R in regenerating heavily-cleared native habitats. Through small, repeated acts of repair on degraded land, a form of 'quiet activism' emerges. Artist Stephanie Doddridge embodies this gentle resistance in her 'toolkit' for ecological restoration.  Seed orchard plans, stitched plant identification lists, and poetic tools crafted from experimental bioplastics embedded with native seeds, become metaphors for the process of regeneration. Please see exhibition opening hours here.

Power Surge - Into the grid

Sun, 25 Oct, 10:00 am ACDT

Adelaide · Free admission

Power Surge – Into the Grid features prototype lighting designs created by JamFactory Studio Associates working across glass, metal, timber and ceramics. The prototypes were developed as part of JamFactory's annual product design challenge 'Design a Thing', led throughout 2026 by JamFactory's Creative Directors. As part of their training, Associates accepted the challenge to develop a functional light fixture or lamp which incorporated a metre long LED strip into a product design suitable for the marketplace. Within the limits of time, skill, material cost and pliability, Associates have created a body of work which highlights the role of playfulness, experimentation and innovation in the process of product design and production. The works displayed delight in their functionality, their assertiveness, their whimsy and technical mastery. Each creation reveals the a unique design signature through each Associates carefully considered aesthetics and skilled material manufacture, as evident here with ceramics delicately pressed with linen to give texture and warmth, glowing faceted timber, blown glass forms, cold worked and made gestural with light, finely detailed brass paired with paper screen, and a running metal ribbon as scaled-up jewellery for the wall.

X KEULEMANS

Sun, 25 Oct, 10:00 am ACDT

Adelaide · Free admission

An exhibition of creative works by South Australian designer, artist and researcher Guy Keulemans in collaboration with leading Australian designers. This is the third iteration in the biennial series of solo exhibitions presented by JamFactory in partnership with Adelaide University to highlight the artistic achievements and knowledge of key members of the creative faculty. For many, the material world has never been more abundant, while planetary existence has never been more perilous. In the face of an interconnected crisis – waste, pollution, climate change and the unease of accelerating production and consumption – Keulemans and his collaborators ask, what is the role for design and craft? What is it that should be made, or remade? The works in this exhibition attempt to bring into the senses new aspirations for the manufactured world. Themes of transformative repair, localism and collaboration explore the agency in studio practice. The collaborations are signified by the X in the title; a symbol of a multiplying force for the consensus required to change material culture. Presented as part of Adelaide Design Week Presented in partnership with Adelaide University

James Tylor: Turrangka...in the shadows

Sun, 25 Oct, 10:00 am ACDT

Adelaide · Check price with organiser

Turrangka…in the shadows surveys over a decade of James Tylor's practice and brings together the most comprehensive selection of his unique daguerreotypes, expansive digital photographic series, hand-made Kaurna cultural objects and furniture. The exhibition title is drawn from a Kaurna word, highlighting a significant ongoing aspect of Tylor's practice: the learning and sharing of his Indigenous language. As well as shadow, turra also translates to reflection, image and mirror. At the core of Tylor's practice is a continuously innovative program of photographic intervention, disrupting the image to redact or highlight visual information. He systematically alters the reading of Country by excising information from the photographic print or inscribing language and place-names onto the surface of his daguerreotypes. These photographs provide a glimpse into Tylor's broader practice of recreating Kaurna cultural artefacts, architecture and ephemera. Antiquated analogue photographic processes including Becquerel daguerreotypes and hand-tinting are also used to generate a new archive of pseudo-historical images. Tylor's recreations point to the absence of these images from the hegemonic depiction of colonial Australia's visual history. A UNSW Galleries, Sydney exhibition, presented in partnership with Art Gallery of South Australia. Presented during SALA Festival.
