Apni’s Alaap | Surabhi Saraf

Mon, 26 Oct, 12:00 am ACDT

Adelaide · Free admission

Apni's Alaap invites viewers into the world of Apni, a kinmaker and quantum listener whose name reflects her kaleidoscopic and porous identity. This contemplative video work features Apni as she moves slowly, listening through time, matter, and spirit. Transforming her body into a sounding vessel, she playfully dances to the hidden songs in the dreams and desires of the generations of women who raised her. Apni can mean yours, mine, my, hers, ours, theirs, self, or own. To call someone "apni" is to say she is one of us, or she is her own. This duality embodies the essence of belonging, blurring the boundaries between self and other, an exploration core to the practice of kinmaking. It is believed that the first kin must always be made with oneself. Through quantum listening, Apni embodies her name, weaving these complex layers of identity and connection into portals for healing wounds that traverse time.

CIPX Kaurna Miyurna (Critical Indigenous Photographic Exchange with the Kaurna Community)

Mon, 26 Oct, 12:00 am ACDT

Adelaide · Free admission

These works form part of the Critical Indigenous Photographic Exchange (CIPX), an international Indigenous portraiture project conceived by Will Wilson, a Diné (Navajo) artist based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. The CIPX project invites Indigenous photographers from around the world to create portraits of members of their local communities using the nineteenth-century tintype process. Kaurna artists Damien Shen and James Tylor have contributed to this contemporary project, which seeks to recontextualise early photographic documentation of Kaurna people produced by European colonists and anthropologists in South Australia during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These CIPX portraits differ significantly from earlier images of Aboriginal people taken by Europeans, and the project is designed to prioritise agency and respect for contemporary Indigenous sitters. OzAsia Festival 2026 | Hong Kong Dragon

Mon, 26 Oct, 12:00 am ACDT

Adelaide · Free admission

The spectacular Hong Kong Dragon lantern returns to light up the Riverbank Footbridge this OzAsia Festival! At 40 metres long, the Hong Kong Dragon greets everyone who passes by. As one of the Chinese zodiac's most magical creatures, the dragon is a symbol of strength, wisdom and good luck. Said to dwell in rivers and seas, Chinese dragons are friendly guardians of water and weather, and this one seems right at home above the river, watching over everyone with a smile. Hong Kong artist Vivian Ho has imagined this dragon, drawing on everyday Hong Kong scenes and blending the hustle and bustle of city life with the tranquility of nature. Inspired by Kowloon Walled City, once a crowded maze of buildings, now a peaceful park, the Hong Kong Dragon becomes a bridge between urban life and the natural world.

Entombed in Joy | Damien Shen

Mon, 26 Oct, 12:00 am ACDT

Adelaide · Free admission

Entombed in Joy is Damien Shen's most buoyant body of work, bringing together the visual languages that shaped him across childhood, culture and adulthood. Familiar 1980s cartoon characters and pop-culture symbols adorn bold, shield-like forms patterned with references to Shen's Ngarrindjeri and Kaurna heritage. These paintings consider identity as something both inherited and customised: an accumulation of cultural memory, personal affiliation, protection and play. Created after Shen stepped away from art during the COVID-19 pandemic, while working in South Australia's emergency response, the exhibition marks a deliberate return to creativity through joy. Yet the title retains an undertone of mortality. To be "entombed in joy" suggests being surrounded by the images, stories and symbols that gave life meaning. Through energetic colour and precise illustration, Shen transforms nostalgia into a meditation on belonging, resilience, and the enduring armour of identity through time itself.

The 'Mall's Balls' (The Spheres)

Adelaide

The Spheres (affectionately titled the 'Mall's Balls' by locals) is Rundle Mall's most iconic artwork. Made from a pair of larger-than-life stainless steel spheres sitting one atop the other, the artwork measures just over 4 metres tall and was brought to life by Vienna-born artist Bert Flugelman. Flugelman always wanted the artwork to be interacted with: "After we put it up on the Sunday afternoon I went back on the Monday to watch community responses to it. A very little old lady came walking up to it and looked at it and then she opened up her handbag and took out her handkerchief and blew on the work and wiped it. I thought it was wonderful. I thought that’s alright. It works!" The Hindmarsh Building Society donated The Spheres to the City of Adelaide in 1977 to mark their centenary. Today, The Spheres is a popular meeting place, with most Adelaide locals having met someone at the Mall's Balls when visiting Rundle Mall. Their shape has become synonymous with Rundle Mall and Adelaide as a whole, appearing on posters, t-shirts — and even the Rundle Mall logo. You'll often see kids playing with the artwork's reflections and tourists taking a photo of themselves using The Spheres as a backdrop.

Opal Diamond Factory

Adelaide

Established in 1974, Opal and Diamond Factory is Adelaide’s oldest and largest opal, diamond and coloured gem specialist. Their collection of South Australian crystal and white opals, Queensland boulder opals and famous Lightning Ridge black opals is the most extensive in Australia. Amid the hot, red dust of Coober Pedy in South Australia’s far north, opal pioneer John Ryneš and son Mike Saj-Ryneš discovered a love for Australia’s national gemstone. At the Opal and Diamond Factory, the Ryneš family crafts jewellery, including bespoke pieces, from opals, ethically-sourced GIA certified diamonds and other precious stones. They are proud to have played small parts in thousands of stories - from love celebrations and special moments, to the creation of keepsakes and treasured gifts. Collaborating with their customers is at the heart of what they do. Their success is the result of passion and hard work; whether it be cutting rough opals straight from the mine, or shaping elegant, custom jewellery in their design studio.

Landmarks and Buildings

'A Day Out' by Marguerite Derricourt

Adelaide

On 3 July 1999, Rundle Mall welcomed four new residents —Horatio, Oliver, Truffles and Augusta. Made completely from bronze, these life-sized pigs look to be having a great day out in Rundle Mall as they walk the Mall, dig through the bin for food scraps and greet passers-by. The art installation officially known as A Day Out was created by Marguerite Derricourt, the winner of a national sculpture competition instigated by the City of Adelaide in the final stages of the Rundle Mall upgrades in the late 1990s. The people of Adelaide loved the pigs so much, a competition was held to name them and you can find a plaque next to each pig stating its name and the name of the person who named them. Children and adults alike are often seen hugging, sitting on and posing for pictures with the popular pigs on their days out in Rundle Mall.

'Pigeon' Sculpture

Adelaide

The humble pigeon has been elevated to new heights with the installation in Gawler Place of 'Pigeon', a homage to those feathery urban dwellers that inhabit many city centres, including our own Rundle Mall. Nationally and internationally recognised South Australian artist Paul Sloan is the creator of Pigeon, which will stand over two metres tall and is crafted out of mirrored stainless steel. Paul’s vision was to raise the status of the humble pigeon from an overlooked, ubiquitous creature to the realm of awe and wonder. “I see pigeons as proud flaneurs, promenading through our leisure and retail precincts. They are the quiet witnesses of our day-to-day activities in the city, our observers from day through to night” Paul says. Find 'Pigeon' in Gawler Place, outside Nespresso.
