This exhibition at WA Maritime Museum celebrates the remarkable diversity of Western Australia, from the windswept shores of the coastline to the rugged beauty and rich ochre landscapes of Karijini and El Questro.

The first solo exhibition in a state art gallery by internationally acclaimed, Western Australian-born artist, Tim Burns.
A protean figure, Tim Burns is one of Australia's pre-eminent conceptual artists. His oeuvre has long been fugitive; variously and at times intentionally, by the artist himself, dissembled, obfuscated and ventriloquized.
Spanning his six-decade career, this exhibition showcases Burns's unique contributions to the fields of performance, video and conceptual art, his formative role in experimental filmmaking and his talents as a painter.
The Kinetic Moments includes paintings, works on paper, artist's books, films, video works, ephemera and archival material, with more than 35 works by the artist and collaborators from major Australian public and private collections on display. From original performance documentation unseen since the 1970s, to paintings completed as recently as 2025, the exhibition charts Burns's development from a radical artist into an artistic force majeure.
At the exhibition's core is Burns's first work in the State Art Collection, Resumé 73-77. A single-edition deconstructed artist's book that documents one of Burns's most radical and productive artmaking periods and journeys across cities, countries and art movements. Set between his earliest surviving paintings from 1969 and his later forays into super-8 filmmaking, this work, and by extension the exhibition, reveals Burns's continual positioning of himself as an artist at the intersection of radical politics, academic enquiry and conceptual provocations.
All the secrets are buried between the oceans and the mountains, is the first solo exhibition by acclaimed Western Australian artist Stormie Mills to be held at an Australian state gallery.
A defining figure in Australian street art, Mills has spent four decades shaping the visual language of contemporary urban culture. This landmark exhibition presents a new body of work reflecting his global movements, personal history, and the encounters that have informed his distinctive practice since he first began painting in 1984.
Through his sustained practice, Mills has played a pivotal role in advancing street art as a recognised contemporary art form, helping shift public perception from underground graffiti to a respected and influential movement. His works, rendered in a restrained palette of black, white, grey and silver, explore themes of isolation, tenderness, resilience and the human condition. Their quiet vulnerability and hope have resonated with audiences across cultures and continents.
All the secrets are buried between the oceans and the mountains brings together a significant body of new and recent works that reflect Mills' desire to connect intimately with others through painting, through storytelling, and through shared emotional experience.
No night is long enough for us to dream twice (a title drawn from a line by the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish) brings together contemporary photography and video by nine artists – Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme, Mohamad Abdouni, Hicham Benohoud, Myriam Boulos, Mohamed Bourouissa, Sabiha Çimen, Hannah Darabi and Abdulhamid Kircher – from South West Asia, North Africa and their diasporas.
What connects these artists is not geography alone but a shared engagement with conditions of pressure, rupture and transformation. Their works emerge from sites where social, political and emotional forces accumulate, break apart and reform. In doing so, they mirror the contemporary condition of photography itself: a medium operating at the limits of representation and reality.
Rather than simply documenting what has been, these images push against the boundaries of the world they depict. Through aesthetic strategies of intensification, the artists create images that are hypervisceral, hypersaturated and affectively overwhelming. Photography becomes less a record than a force, capable of unsettling perception and opening new ways of seeing.
The show reflects on the unstable relationship between images and reality in the present moment. If dreaming is understood as a collective and political act of imagining otherwise, the title suggests that the work of the image in shaping reality remains unfinished.

Standing at the entrance to the Mirvac office tower, this striking sculpture marks a defining moment in Perth's history—the felling of a tree in 1829 to commemorate the city's founding. More than just a landmark, it serves as a powerful symbol of renewal, cultural identity, and continuity.
Crafted from interwoven stainless steel tubes, the sculpture rises in a form inspired by ancient tree trunks. Its modern design reflects the enduring strength and interconnectedness of community, nature, and heritage. The tree form, with its elegant buttressed lines, honours both the past and the regenerative cycles shaping the city's future.
At pavement level, the sculpture splits into three branches, encircling a stone marking the precise site of the original tree. This base includes an engraved "end grain" detail—an artistic reference to the foundation tree's cut surface—offering a tactile, symbolic connection to the land and its layered history.
Located in the heart of the city, the Foundation Tree sculpture is more than a piece of public art; it's a place of reflection, a cultural waypoint, and a reminder of Perth's beginnings and its ongoing transformation.
Immerse yourself in Western Australia's shared cultural history at Onward! Onward!, a compelling, site-specific public art installation located in the heart of Perth's Cathedral Square. Created by renowned local artist Marcus Canning, this thought-provoking piece invites visitors to look down and connect deeply with the land's First Peoples.
The artwork features 256 granite pavers seamlessly integrated into the public plaza. Each paver is intricately etched with English and Noongar words and phrases, gently encouraging reflection, conversation, and cultural awareness as you stroll through the precinct.
Canning, whose own family heritage includes his great-great-uncle and famed WA surveyor Alfred Canning, designed the piece to playfully yet profoundly contrast colonial mapping with enduring Indigenous language. It stands as a subtle, powerful celebration of cultural resilience.
Centrally located between St Georges Terrace and Hay Street, this open-air exhibition is completely free to access and open 24/7. It serves as a perfect cultural stop during a walking tour of the Perth CBD.
