Clifford How | Southwest Solitude

Fri, 13 Nov, 10:00 am AEDT

Hobart · Free admission

In Lutruwita/Tasmania's South-West, the landscape can change in minutes. Mountain ranges disappear into cloud, tannin-stained creeks surge, and familiar contours shift as fronts roll in from the Southern Ocean. It is within these constantly changing conditions that Clifford How developed the work for his upcoming exhibition, 'Southwest Solitude'. From Port Davey to Bathurst Harbour, this new body of work draws us into one of the most remote places in the world — a place few of us will ever experience for ourselves. Clifford How has practised as an artist for over eighteen years, exhibiting extensively across Tasmania and in Sydney. He is the recipient of the Hornsby Art Prize (2018), Wrest Point Art Award (2017) and TASART Award (2016), and has been a finalist in The King's School Art Prize (2024), Calleen Art Prize (2017), Glover Art Prize (2017, 2016) and Paddington Art Prize (2016). In 2018, How's practice was featured in Amber Creswell Bell's A Painted Landscape: Across Australia from Bush to Coast, alongside other notable Australian landscape painters.

Katie Noonan - Alone but All One Tour - Hobart

Fri, 13 Nov, 7:00 pm AEDT

Hobart · Check price with organiser

Five times ARIA Award winning artist Katie Noonan has released her 30th studio album: Alone but All One. The album is an intimate and powerful exploration of love in all its stages and features Katie's first songwriting collaboration with acclaimed writer Trent Dalton. The album is a powerful and delicate offering with Katie's piano and a string quartet the only accompaniment for her exquisite vocal performance. Alone but All One is a quiet turning inward - a return to something essential. Musically it is very stripped back - just Katie, her piano and a string quartet, recorded live in her lounge room on Gubbi Gubbi Country in the hills behind Nambour, Queensland. It feels like a deep breath before the next chapter. The creative intention is clear: to honour this moment, share it with care, and trust that others will feel themselves in it too.

Semaphore Cottage

Hobart

For the first time in decades, Semaphore Cottage is open to the public on a regular basis. Recognised as the oldest surviving building in Battery Point, Semaphore Cottage was originally built as the guardhouse for the Mulgrave Battery, Hobart's first defensive fortification. Over time, it evolved into the central headquarters for the semaphore telegraph system, which extended from Hobart to Port Arthur. This system, one of the most advanced of its time, could transmit messages across a 54-kilometre chain of stations within minutes. The cottage's historical significance was acknowledged in the 1930s when the Shiplovers' Society of Tasmania led a successful campaign to save it from demolition. Today, the cottage is cared for by Maritime Museum Tasmania. Step inside and explore its remarkable story and its role in Hobart's maritime past. Come and discover a hidden part of Hobart's maritime heritage. With thanks to the Hobart City Council for their generous support in making these public openings possible.

John Elliott Classics Museum

Hobart

A boutique antiquities museum housing examples of the art and culture of the major ancient Mediterranean civilisations. It was established in 1955 by John Elliott, Professor of Classics, to create a teaching and research collection which was also accessible to the public. From Egypt come the assorted amulets, scarabs and ushabti figures found in most ancient Egyptian tombs. A limestone false tomb door, through which the deceased's spirit could pass, is a highlight. Much of the Greek collection comprises pottery which traces stylistic developments in Greek art, from early static, geometric decoration to the fluid, elegant figures of the Classical era. Beautiful yet functional, they speak equally of mythical tales, religious reverence, and wild party nights. Whether it's a centurion's sword, floor mosaics, jewellery and cosmetic items, or bronze surgical implements, the Roman artefacts give many insights into daily life in the Roman world. Once unearthed by archaeologists, they now await discovery by you. The extensive range of Greek and Roman coins, often miniature works of art, reveal much about political realities and ambitions by their use as propaganda tools - proof that political spin and manipulation has a long history. Hobart

Beneath the shadow of Mount Wellington, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cascades Female Factory is the best place to connect with some of the lesser-known stories of Australia's female convicts. It is located in South Hobart, only a short distance from the Hobart waterfront. Thousands of women and children were imprisoned here, and many never left. The Convict Women's Tour is a comprehensive guided tour of the Site. It lasts approximately 45 minutes. The first tour starts at 10 am. The new Notorious Strumpets and Dangerous Girls is an emotional journey through the stories of seven remarkable convict women who faced life's hardships with resilience.
