Alejandro's was born from a vision to create more than just a gallery, it's a home for creativity, community, and expression. Inspired by years of creating art that celebrates life, identity, and emotion, I wanted to build a space where those values could live and breathe in Newcastle.
At Alejandro's, art isn't just something to look at it's something to experience. The gallery showcases bold, vibrant works that speak to the human journey, while the workshops invite people to create, heal, and connect through storytelling, culture, and expression.
Shepherds Hill cottage has stood watch over Newcastle from atop King Edward Park since the 1890s. The cottage, battery observation post and gun emplacement were originally designed to defend Newcastle's burgeoning coal port after the 1878 Royal Commission into Colonial Defences. The military site served as an integral command position up to the end of World War II and is one of the only coastal defence sites in Australia manned simultaneously during World War II by the Royal Australian Navy, Army and Royal Australia Air Force.
From the early 2000s the cottage was leased to Marine Rescue NSW as one of their headquarters, until a severe storm event damaged the cottage extensively in 2015. Restoration works were completed in early 2022 following an intensive 3-year process, and a cafe and restaurant are now set to open at this historic site in 2026.
The Cottage is positioned near Newcastle's King Edward Park and forms part of the iconic Bathers Way walk, stretching from Nobby's Beach to Merewether Ocean Baths.
With its distinctive and architecturally significant Art Deco pavilion, Newcastle Ocean Baths is one of the city's outstanding historic landmarks and is a popular informal open-air studio for amateur photographers.
The Ocean Baths were constructed and in use before World War One, though not formally opened until the 1920s. The baths' popularity has never waned throughout the ensuing decades, and thousands of Novocastrians remember it fondly as the place where they first learned to swim. Construction began in 1910 with the construction of the pavilion beginning in 1922.
The Newcastle Ocean Baths are open all year round, subject to maintenance and cleaning. Cleaning is done every Wednesday and the Baths are closed to the public.
King Edward Park was dedicated as a recreation reserve in 1863. Within the grounds was a bowling green and the Obelisk, built as a navigational marker in 1850; the focal point is a Victorian rotunda.
The park has spectacular ocean views, Norfolk Island pines and a sunken garden usually ablaze with colour.
On the southern boundary are the remains of the Shepherds Hill Battery and Gunner's Cottage which were in regular use from 1890 to World War II.
The park also has links with Newcastle's penal past, with the Bogey Hole (or convict-hewn ocean bathing pool) at the foot of the eastern cliff face.
It is a popular place for family picnics and barbecues and is now a movie venue in summer. The park also has a playground and public toilets.
The Bogey Hole ocean pool is an Instagrammers dream, and a 'must see' attraction on the Newcastle coastline. Impressive at full flight, or in a moment of calm, take a moment to enjoy the Bogey Hole next time you are in King Edward Park.
The Bogey Hole was hand-hewn out of a wave-cut rock platform by convicts for Major James Morisset, in 1819 for his personal use. Whether this work represented the enlargement of a naturally occurring rock pool used by Aboriginal people is not known.
As Morisset was the longest-serving Commandant of Newcastle, the pool was originally referred to as the 'Commandant's Baths'. The name 'Bogey Hole' came into regular usage sometime after, and is said to come from the Dharawal word meaning 'to bathe'.
The Bogey Hole is situated at the foot of Shepherds Hill, or as it was known in the 1820's "sheep pasturage hill". Geologically, the rock in the area is sandstone/conglomerate typical of the coastal areas of the Hawkesbury Sandstone deposit on which Newcastle was built.
It is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register in recognition of its importance in the course of NSW's history. Potentially the place has a national significance as the earliest known example in the whole of Australia of a purpose-built ocean swimming pool.
Located at the eastern end of Newcastle Beach, Canoe Pool is a perfect destination for families with little ones. This shallow wading pool provides a safe and enjoyable space for splashing, swimming and building sandcastles. The pool's water levels vary depending on the sand, creating a unique experience each time.
To make the most of your visit, bring your own sun shelter, as the pool area can get busy during summer, resembling a village of sun tents. There are shaded picnic tables and accessible toilets nearby at Newcastle Ocean Baths.
