Choirboys - Great Australian Rock N Roll Stories - Newcastle

Sat, 7 Nov, 8:00 pm AEDT

Newcastle · Check price with organiser

Back in 1978, a group of twenty-something mates from Sydney's Northern Beaches formed a band called Choirboys. Surrounded by the wild, hedonistic chaos of the '70s youth culture, they soaked it all in—every misstep, every party, every outrageous moment. That life would ultimately give birth to their defining anthem: Run to Paradise. Fuelled by the stories that have long echoed through the halls of rock history—Run to Paradise became more than a hit; it became the opening line in a book of untold stories. Now, 35 years later, the band is ready to open that book and spill everything. Part concert, part story, Run to Paradise is a raw, hilarious, and jaw-dropping journey through the golden era of Australian pub rock. Told in their own words, the Choirboys share the stories you were never meant to hear—wild nights, backstage madness, and the kind of insanity only a rock band could survive... all, as these Oz pub-rock icons recall it. Set to a soundtrack of the era's most legendary tracks—from AC/DC, The Angels, Dragon, Screaming Jets, Deep Purple, Divinyls, and more—plus all the Choirboys' hits including Boys Will Be Boys, Never Gonna Die, Struggletown, and of course, Run to Paradise. This is Run to Paradise—where the stories are wild, the music is loud, and the truth is somewhere in between.

It offers large shady trees, tiered garden beds, war memorials, and expanses of lawn perfect for impromptu picnics. Once coal mining land, the 2.5-hectare space was passed into public hands and opened for community use in 1937. With its arresting parabolic arcs of water, the fountain is a favourite backdrop for photographers.

Fort Scratchley Historical Site

Newcastle East

Fort Scratchley is an historical coastal Fort built in 1882. The Fort overlooks Newcastle Harbour and Nobbys Beach and is home to the only two land-based guns in Australia ever to be engaged in a Naval Engagement. The site contains a museum detailing the Forts history. Fort Scratchley was in continuous use by the Australian Army until the end of 1972, at that time the Fort remained empty until being used by the local Maritime Museum. In 2004, the Federal Government led by John Howard allocated AUD 8 million to restore the site. When completed it was handed over to Newcastle Council and the Historical Society took operational control and continued to develop the site to what you see today. Entry to the grounds is free but tour of the historic tunnels and gun emplacements are subject to a charge. Subject to weather conditions, the time gun is fired daily. This attraction is 100 percent volunteer operated.

Fort Scratchley - Daily Time Gun Firing

Newcastle East

Fort Scratchley does the time-honoured seafaring tradition of firing a gun at 1 pm daily to coincide with Newcastle's Customs House time ball drop. The time ball and gun firing at precisely 1 pm were used in ports around the world in the 19th century to allow sea captains to adjust their navigation instruments. Newcastle is one of the very few ports around the world that have the capability of firing a gun in tandem with the drop of a time ball. This firing is sponsored by Newcastle Ports Corp and Hunter Water. This tradition is best viewed from the parade ground at Fort Scratchley with Customs House in the background. Please note that the Fort is closed Tuesdays.

Nesca Park

The Hill

Nesca Park is a wonderful destination for families and visitors alike. Located in the very heart of the city, just off Darby Street in The Hill, it is a spacious park filled with green lawns, palm trees and surrounded by beautiful coastal bushland. A modern playground includes BBQ facilities and covered picnic tables. The park is also home to the Newcastle Pétanque Club and is popular with dog owners thanks to its large, approved off-leash area. Once the site of the AA Company's Sea Pit, operating from 1886 to 1916, it employed more than 1,100 people. After the pit's closure, its water storage dam was adapted to supply water to Newcastle's first power station the Newcastle Electric Light Station. During the 1960s the area was transformed into parkland, with the eastern surrounds planted with a mix of native and exotic tree species. Since 2022, Landcare has been transforming this park with an impressive variety of coastal woodland and rainforest species. Enhancing biodiversity has been a key focus, with the introduction of native stingless bees, nesting boxes for Eastern Rosellas, dreys for Ringtail Possums, and watering points for local birds and wildlife. On the eastern side of Nesca Parade, the gully leading up to Memorial Drive has a woodland corridor connecting to the Trig and King Edward Park. Calls of Whipbirds can be heard each morning.

Newcastle Memorial Walk

The Hill

The Newcastle Memorial Walk was opened in 2015 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landing in Gallipoli. As well as honouring the sacrifices made by Australian soldiers during World War I, this date also marks the commencement of steel making in Newcastle; the memorial walk was built using 64 tonnes of stainless steel for this very reason. The walkway is also adorned with steel silhouettes of soldiers, as well as the names of almost 11,000 Hunter Valley men and women who enlisted to serve during World War I. The Newcastle Memorial Walk consists of two sections: the first is a 160-metre-long bridge that starts at Strzelecki Lookout and leads to another stunning viewing platform. The second section is a stairway that connects the memorial walk to Bathers Way, a six-kilometre coastal walk from Nobbys Beach down to Merewether Beach. With stunning cliff-top views and an important message for younger generations, this memorial walk is one of Newcastle's biggest recent developments. With lights illuminating the path after dark, visitors are welcome 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
