Explore the region
Explore Bundaberg, its coastal communities and nearby hinterland towns. Childers and Gin Gin are separate drives; island experiences need their own transport plans.
The Cochrane Artificial Reef in the Woongarra Marine Park is like stepping into an underwater movie set. Just a short boat ride from shore, you'll find the impressive 50-metre Ceratodus II and 40-metre Porteur, joined by two Mohawk aircraft, a Kingair aircraft, lightships and a maze of concrete structures now teeming with coral and marine life.
This underwater playground attracts schools of fish, friendly estuary cod, a resident groper family, stingrays, turtles, wobbegong sharks and a colourful cast of reef species.
Keep your eyes peeled... you never know what might be swimming around the next corner.
Flowering heaths, quiet beaches and abundant wildlife make this park a place to retreat, relax and appreciate the splendour and peace of the natural environment.
Explore the park on one of the several walking tracks and discover diverse coastal habitats. Burrum Coast National Park is spread over four sections, south of Bundaberg.
You will find mangrove-lined riverbanks, wallum heath with spectacular wildflowers and tea tree dominated wetlands where huge cabbage palms reach through the canopy. Areas of deeper soil support eucalypt forests, including the vulnerable Goodwood gum Eucalyptus hallii.
In the Kinkuna section, enjoy the narrow picturesque beach, low coastal dunes, tea-coloured waterways and flat sandy plains.
Explore the Woodgate section on a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk across a melaleuca swamp (look for the cabbage palms) or along walking tracks to viewing and fishing platforms, and a bird hide. Canoe across the river, go birdwatching your try your luck at fishing.
Enjoy camping at Burrum Point or behind the dunes at Kinkuna (both four wheel drive access only). In late winter and spring, delight in the wallum heath wildflower 'show'.
Just 20km north of Gin Gin, and about 4.5 hours drive from Brisbane sits Lake Monduran.
Known for its breathtaking scenery and tranquillity, this man-made lake offers a perfect retreat for fishing enthusiasts, water sport wizards and nature lovers alike.
Spanning over 5,000 hectares, the lake is a haven for anglers, boasting an abundance of barramundi, Australian bass, and other freshwater species. If you’re not hook, line and sinker about spending your day fishing, Lake Monduran is a popular spot for kayaking, waterskiing and wakeboarding, with lush, green landscape surrounding the water, perfect for picnicking, hiking and bird-watching.
The area has great cabin and camping options so you can stay and play a little longer. You can hire a houseboat to cruise the lake or hire a boat if you don't have one with you - giving you more chances to reel in a big one!
