Dr Christian Thompson AO traverses and dissolves binary boundaries through an artistic practice that spans photography, performance, sculpture, moving image and sound. The artist critically engages with concepts of race, sexuality, gender and memory by inhabiting imagined personas, captured in fantastical environments frequently centered on native flora. In House of Gold Thompson shifts focus to explore his Chinese heritage, dating back to the 1850s Gold Rush migration boom.
House of Gold draws inspiration from a line of Song Dynasty poetry or, 'a book in the hand holds a house of gold'. The exhibition chronicles a personal history of intersectional identity at generational scale, where Thompson gives us glimpses of intimate moments shared between both his First Nations Bidjara and Cantonese family – learnings of language, food and self that make the artist whole.

Modernist Scottish writer and poet Nan Shepherd expresses a sensual focussed immersion in nature which has been described as "living all the way through" whereby "everything is connected to everything else."
Patrice Wills is a Shoalhaven artist also interested in the relationship between the outer landscape of where she lives, and the inner landscape of the human spirit.
Her paintings and ceramics express how the self becomes inseparable from the surrounding environment. She presents human figures as integral to the story of the land as the wind, stones, rivers, and creatures, to remind us that we too are nature, longing for ways of being that are symbiotic, beyond the material world. The river, sky, sea, and shoreline operate as a protagonist, delivering more than just a background for human endeavour, but actively providing our sense of who we are.
Patrice has been selected as a finalist in major art awards, including the Archibald Prize, the Pro Hart Outback Prize, and the Fishers Ghost Art Award. Wills was selected for this exhibition as part of the Gallery's ongoing support for local artists.
Home Island – Cocos Island Dreaming is a multidisciplinary installation led by an observational film work that explores the cultural, social, and emotional ties between Cocos (Keeling) Islands and rural Wheatbelt Western Australia. Premiering at Shoalhaven Regional Gallery in 2026, the project foregrounds moving image as its central anchor, with printmaking and sound forming a layered, immersive environment around it.
The film adopts a quiet, observational approach, contrasting everyday life, landscapes, and rhythms of island culture with those of regional Western Australia, particularly Katanning. Through extended moments of looking and listening, it reveals how Cocos Malay communities operate as a living bridge between these two places—maintaining cultural practices, kinship, and memory across distance and displacement.
Surrounding the film are experimental print works, including prints on sheepskin that reference the labour histories of Cocos Malays employed in Katanning's meat industry. These tactile surfaces function as material traces of migration and resilience, embedding history directly into the installation. A composed soundscape drawn from field recordings, interviews, and musical elements further connects the visual components, echoing both coastal and inland environments.
Together, these elements form a multi sensory reflection on intergenerational memory, post-colonial identity, and cultural survival. Home Island – Cocos Island Dreaming offers audiences an embodied encounter with underrepresented histories, honouring the communities that sustain connection between island homelands and the Australian Wheatbelt.
What the Dark Remembers draws on Mariana del Castillo's lived experience of migration and cultural inheritance. Del Castillo was born in Ecuador, from a mestizo background shaped by Indigenous knowledge alongside European colonial histories. In her childhood, the Black Witch moth, Ascalapha odorata, is regarded as an omen of death and transformation. After migrating to Australia, she encountered the Bogong moth, Agrotis infusa, whose seasonal movement connects multiple First Nations peoples to Country, ceremony, and ecological knowledge.
The exhibition is an installation of moth-like structures made from repurposed fabric, eco-printed using eucalyptus leaves, and hand-stitched with cotton and glow-in-the-dark thread.

Inspiring artworks that tell the stories of the Shoalhaven.
Talented, emerging street artists can really breathe new life into a city. Their vision and ideas have the ability to start a conversation, transform a once tired space and add a touch of vibrance to local enclaves.
In a collaborative effort to rejuvenate Nowra's streets and laneways, Shoalhaven City Council, the Shoalhaven Historical Society and local building and shop owners have come together to commission a series of artist murals around the CBD.
Visitors and locals can venture along the Nowra murals trail and discover each artwork, that highlights a different part of the region's history. Wandering from mural to mural is also a great way of exploring Nowra and its surrounds a little bit differently.
Nowra Museum, despite being small in size, has a reputation as being a leading volunteer-run regional museum. With a collection of over 30,000 artefacts, documents and images, the Nowra Museum is the single largest repository for Shoalhaven’s history.
The museum has four display areas that are regularly changed, the administration room and collections storage space. The hallway of the Museum, known as the Halloran Gallery, holds the only public permanent display of artworks from renowned local artist Samuel Elyard.

Expert volunteers are available for guidance with research projects.

Meroogal, in the south coast town of Nowra, was built from 1885 to 1886. This delightful timber house, with its 'gothic' trimmings, is a charming testament to its early days and early ways.
Meroogal is a house that was greatly cherished by its owners. It was passed through the hands of four generations of women from the same family. The women led busy and fulfilled lives and their daily routines encompassed domestic chores and the pursuit of their own genteel interests and talents. Furniture, household objects, diaries, letters, scrapbooks, photographs and clothes allow a very personal insight into the more private world of the family.
It is unusual for a house to be occupied by the same family for such a length of time, even in rural areas. Meroogal has survived to make its contribution to the study of social history.
The Nowra Historical Walk is a self-guided walking tour which highlights various historical buildings and places.
The tour can be done in smaller sections, with opportunities to visit eateries, parks and galleries along the way. Highlights include Marriot Park, the Werninck Craft Cottage, Nowra Museum (built as a police station in 1900) and Hanging Rock Lookout, which leads on to Ben's Walk.
This biennial prize celebrates the achievements and creativity of women artists in NSW through works that respond to the historic house of Meroogal, its rich cultural heritage and enduring sense of place. Artworks on exhibition include ceramics, illustrations, paintings, textile works and sculptural forms produced in varying mediums.
Artists from across NSW were invited to submit artworks that respond to Meroogal and its meaning within broader historical and contemporary contexts. The finalist artworks are displayed throughout the house to provide new perspectives on the stories of the people who once lived there and the treasured possessions they left in the home.
Tour the house and exhibition and vote for your favourite artwork in the People's Choice Award.

The mighty Shoalhaven River is one of Shoalhaven's most famous natural assets, right up there with Didthul Pigeon House Mountain (Balgan) and Jervis Bay.
Stretching 327 kilometres, it originates on the eastern side of the Great Dividing Range, near Euranbene Mountain, approximately 350 kilometers southwest of Sydney. It flows generally northwards through the pastoral district near Braidwood, then into a canyon east of Goulburn, before reaching the coastal lowlands at Nowra. The Shoalhaven River is joined by 34 tributaries along its course, including the Mongarlowe, Corang, Endrick, and Kangaroo rivers.
