Five Decades: Studies in Realism

Mon, 26 Oct, 10:00 am AEDT

Bathurst · Free admission

BRAG presents a small survey of personal work and invites us into the private collection of local artist Graham Lupp, providing a glimpse of studies made during formative moments and experiences of the artist's life. The exhibition offers a beautiful journey of reflection, retrospection and poignant perspectives, celebrating vulnerability and wisdom across five decades of practice. Realism has always been central to Lupp's work, starting in the 70s as an art student in London and has evolved through the years as playful encounters. Extensive travel in the 90s inspired a new aesthetic — blending images of new experiences overseas with familiar subjects, mostly landscapes, derived from the Bathurst region. Apart from years of studying architecture in Sydney and fine art in London, Lupp has lived continuously in his hometown of Bathurst and developed a lifelong passion for the landscape of the district and has dedicated himself to its meticulous study. In later years this aesthetic has slowly given way to a more expressive approach, in an endeavour to understand the sublime through a deep-seated emotional connection to a childhood spent in the Australian bush. This is a journey through practice, viewed from a vantage point of five decades. Many of these studies have led to larger paintings now held in major public and private collections, but for Lupp these studies are of the greatest value.

Grounding: Stories from Three Collections

Sat, 14 Nov, 12:00 am AEDT

Bathurst · Free admission

For the first time, Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, Cowra Regional Art Gallery, and Orange Regional Gallery are sharing the richness of their collections to create three unique exhibitions, each with a different thematic approach: Grounding, Retrospection, and Affinities. Presenting familiar and unfamiliar works in new contexts, each exhibition sparks fresh conversations, fosters community pride within the Central West, and strengthens cultural tourism across the three destinations. Grounding: Stories from Three Collections at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery explores the ways in which artists respond to place and the ways in which regional collections reflect the histories and identities of place. Grounding looks at regional, national, and international artists across medium and time who consider the physical, emotional, and cultural significance of place. Importantly, the concept of 'grounding' is deeply embedded in Wiradyuri and First Nations culture through connection to Country. Wiradyuri Country and its three rivers (Wambuul, Galari, and Marrambidya), rolling hills and expansive skies have inspired and influenced artists for generations. Artists featured include GW Bot, Liam Benson, Grace Cossington Smith, Aunty Lorraine Connelly Northey, Elisabeth Cummings, Olive Cotton, Max Dupain, Rachel Ellis, Danie Mellor, Luke Sciberras, Merrick Fry and Lloyd Rees.
