Enjoying a diverse array of habitats, Dysart is home to a variety of bird species that even the most passionate birdwatcher hopes to see! Pack your walking shoes, don a hat and some sunscreen (30 SPF plus) and prepare to listen out for bird calls and study the wildlife with your naked eye through some binoculars. Learn from these animals and the values they transmit on respect to nature and the fragility of ecosystems. Emu's can often be seen from the rural roadsides surrounding Dysart, including on the Golden Mile Road. Cockatoo's, galah's and other colourful parrots can be found in abundance in the township, as well as blue-faced honeyeaters. Dysart is part of the Mining Trail drive and brochures can be picked up from Visitor Information Centres in the region.

With more than 350 recorded species, the South Burnett is a bird watchers dream. The region is known for the Black-breasted Button-quail and Glossy Black-Cockatoo, but expect to see the likes of the Red-rumped Parrot, Regent Bowerbird, Rainbow Bee-eater, Dollarbird and Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater too. A diverse array of habitats from dry rainforest and hoop pine forests, to expansive water masses, open woodlands and soft vine scrub, ensures prolific bird life year round. Try these local hot spots: Lake Barambah, Nanango Fauna Sanctuary, Mudlo Conservation Park Kilkivan, Wooroolin Wetlands; Gordonbrook Dam; Boat Mountain Regional Park, Bunya Mountains National Park. Viewing platforms, lookouts and walking tracks are great vantage points, but keep your eyes peeled wherever you are, as you can spot birds along quiet country roads, in parks and urban areas. The South Burnett is ideally situated two and a half hours from Brisbane, the Sunshine and Fraser Coasts. It is fringed by the pine-clad Bunya Mountains to the south-west, the hoop-pine covered Blackbutt Range to the east and the historic Burnett Range to the north. Pack your walking shoes, picnic, hat, bird book and binoculars and record your own list of sightings in the South Burnett.

Birdwatching on Keswick Island is one of the many delights of Keswick Island, where nature enthusiasts can discover an impressive diversity of birdlife. Despite its small size, the island is home to at least 33 recorded bird species, making it a rewarding destination for birdwatchers of all experience levels. Many of Keswick's ground-dwelling birds are easy to spot as they wander along grassy verges or casually cross the island's roads. Keep an eye out for Bush Stone-curlews and Masked Lapwings, which are known for laying their eggs in the most unexpected places, often with little more than a scrape in the ground for a nest. Look to the skies and you may be rewarded with sightings of majestic Sea Eagles and graceful Kites soaring overhead. These impressive birds of prey build large nests, typically on cliff tops, and often return to the same nesting sites year after year. Notable nesting locations on Keswick Island include Langton Point and areas near Singapore Bay, with the best viewing opportunities often enjoyed from the water. The Fraser Coast offers a great range of birdwatching opportunities with over 250 species identified. Every year thousands of migratory shorebirds visit Hervey Bay and the Great Sandy Strait from destinations as far away as Japan, Alaska and Siberia. The sand and mudflats are important feeding grounds for nearly 20 different species of long distance flyers. The range of habitats within close proximity of Hervey Bay will ensure that even the keenest birdwatcher will be amazed at the variety of bird life. Their waterways are home to many species, from the striking black and white jabiru, and the graceful silver-grey brolga, to the distinctive brahminy kite with its deep chestnut wings and white head, neck and breast of the amazing comb-crested jacana that seemingly walks on water thanks to its incredibly long toes. The undergrowth below trees can be protection for so many of those little jewels of nature that live on insects, small fruit and grass-seeds, and are always an enjoyment to observe. Those who visit Hervey Bay are indeed fortunate to experience such diverse habitats suitable for a range of different bird species.

The Birdwing Butterfly Walk is a paved walk, offering a gentle stroll through patches of tropical rainforest, marsh land and open areas unlike anywhere else in the area. There are plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife including Platypus and the beautiful Birdwing Butterfly. Just a few minutes on the path takes you into a range of different areas where you can enjoy some great outdoor activities with the kids - it's perfect for a game of cricket or soccer. There are also great places to throw out a rug and enjoy a picnic lunch under a shady grove of trees or by a babbling brook.

Home to the largest single collection of free-flying birds in Australia, Birdworld Kuranda displays no less than 60 species of the most spectacular birds from all corners of the planet - as well as from the earth's fast-diminishing rainforests. Visitors are free to wander through the lush, tropically landscaped aviary to observe the birds in their own specific - yet natural - habitats. Two lakes connected by a tumbling waterfall are home to waterbirds such as stilts, herons and Australia's own unique Black Swan. In the rainforest canopy overhead, blue, gold and scarlet Macaws dazzle with colourful brilliance as they soar above the treetops. One outstanding Birdworld denizen not to be missed is that rare avian giant, the Southern Cassowary - now officially enlisted as endangered. Designed to 'create a centre where birds would be showcased in their natural environment without the barriers of cages coming between them and their admiring public', Birdworld is a photographers paradise. The Birramal Conservation Area, known locally as ‘Birramal’, is a 128-hectare site designated for the purpose of environmental conservation. This site incorporates a section of the Wiradjuri Trail between the Olympic Highway and Holbrook Road where you can be immersed in nature, art, and spectacular views of Wagga Wagga and Surrounds on foot or bike. ‘Birramal’ in the local Wiradjuri language means ‘the bush’ and reflects the important connection between Wiradjuri peoples and the land they cared for which provided food, resources and sustenance in return. This area is home to an endangered White Box Woodland community which supports the locally endangered squirrel glider. The squirrel glider is a small grey marsupial with a thick brushy tail that can glide 80 metres through the air. In the Birramal Conservation area, you will see ‘glider poles’ that link areas of vegetation. While wandering through Birramal you will see many new tree-planting sites and artificial nest boxes. Native birds and mammals, such as the squirrel glider, make their nests in hollows of ancient trees. Through vegetation clearing, many natural tree hollows have been lost. New plantings provide food and shelter for native animals, and will in the years ahead offer natural tree hollows.

After learning all about the plants, animals and Aboriginal history of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park at Kalkari Discovery Centre, head along the moderately difficult Birrawanna walking track. The kids will love putting their newfound knowledge into practice. A great nature adventure on a family day trip, historic Birrawanna walking track leads to Bobbin Head, where you can stop for a waterfront picnic or grab a tasty lunch at Bobbin Inn Cafe. Skirting the emu enclosure, the medium difficulty track passes through woodlands of scribbly gum and red bloodwood to join a historic track of open forests before reaching Bobbin Head. Be sure to look for the vibrant red waratah. On the way back up, stop for a breather and check out the lovely views over Cockle Creek and Cowan Water. You might see a brown hawk or nankeen kestrel circling above, looking for lizards and insects.

Birriwa Reserve Outdoor Youth Space opened in 2016 and is aimed at the youth of the Camden Local Government Area. The space features adventure play equipment including a large climbing rope structure, a 30 metre cable ride, a three metre slide, sky surf, basket swings, board rider, air rider and rodeo board as well as a passive recreation space and garden.

Birthday Waterhole is a semi-permanent pool on the Hugh River in the Tjoritja/West MacDonnell National Park. It’s also an access point for Sections 4 and 5 of the 231 kilometre Larapinta Trail that extends from Alice Springs to Mt Sonder. Large River Red Gums fringe Birthday Waterhole, which is an important ecological site. Waterbirds are attracted to the waterhole because of its large populations of desert rainbowfish, frogs and aquatic invertebrates. Camping is permitted and access is by high-clearance four-wheel drive only. Birthday Waterhole is 14.4 kilometres from the turn-off on Namatjira Drive. Allow 1 hour driving time. There are no facilities at Birthday Waterhole so ensure you have all of your water and camping requirements with you. Camping fees apply and campsites must be booked online before you arrive.

One of Australia's most remarkable buildings, Bishop's Lodge, was designed by renowned architect John Sulman and built in 1888 as the official residence for the first Anglican bishop of the Riverina, Sydney Linton. Bishop's Lodge is constructed from iron and incorporates many innovative design features (such as sawdust insulation and raised ventilation ridges) to withstand the area's searing summer heat and difficult soils. The lodge is surrounded by a wonderfully cool rose garden, one of the oldest in the region, planted with a spectacular collection of rare heritage varieties. As well as roses, there are historic trees, sweeping lawns and a kitchen garden, all tended by passionate volunteers. The house was the residence for Anglican bishops until the 1930s, when it became a hostel for schoolboys, and then a private residence until the 1980s. It was beautifully restored as part of Hay's major bicentennial project in 1988. Today, the museum has a small but fascinating collection of artefacts from throughout the building's history. Entry cost is an AUD5 donation payable with card or cash upon entry. Bishop's Lodge is now open via electronic device from the Visitor Centre. You press the button, and we will open the house for you to explore. Housed in the garden is the bell steeple from the St Paul's Anglican Church.

Bithry Inlet is a pristine south coast estuary, located at the mouth of Wapengo Lake in Mimosa Rocks National Park. Enjoy a stroll along the sandy shores, take a dip in the warmer months or enjoy beach or estuary fishing. The area around Bithry inlet is a valuable breeding habitat for many fish species. Fishing along the heads is the best spot, with bream, salmon, mulloway and flathead the most popular fish. The best time is around dusk. Toilet amenities, picnic tables, and BBQ areas make it an excellent place to come to relax. From the picnic area, it is possible to walk along the coast to Middle Beach. Historic Myer House offers boutique self-contained accommodation set on Bithry Inlet, available to book through the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service website. Kenneth Myer of the Myer Foundation built this house from a design by renowned architect Sir Roy Grounds, and they generously donated it to NPWS in 1976. Wapengo Lake is a significant oyster-producing estuary of the Sapphire Coast, having supported a thriving oyster farming industry since the late 1880s. Wapengo Rocks was first oyster farm in Australia to be certified organic, and their multi-award-winning oysters can be savoured in local restaurants and eateries in Tathra and Bermagui.

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations
After just a short stroll from Bittangabee Bay carpark, you'll arrive at a site of curious ruins, left untouched since the 1840s. The structure is thought to have been the work of the Imlay brothers at a time when they were well-known pastoralists in the area. Financial hardship and the death of two of the three brothers in quick succession ground things to a halt, and it has remained that way for more than 170 years. This makes for a good side trip from relaxing on the beach at Bittangabee Bay. History buffs will love the remnant of early European history, while others will marvel at the effort once required to build in the rugged Australian bush. Lyrebirds are often glimpsed on the path to the site or heard calling through the trees bring a camera if birdwatching is of interest. Bittangabee Bay to Green Cape walking track is in the southern section of Beowa National Park (formerly Ben Boyd National Park). The walk follows a route that lightkeepers have travelled over many years. Originally, supplies for the lighthouse were offloaded at Bittangabee Bay. If you look closely, you'll see remnants of the old horse-drawn tram track as you walk this moderate track. Wander around the surroundings of Green Cape Lightstation, with informative signs detailing its operation. If you're keen to discover more, guided tours and accommodation are available. The rocky cape is an ideal spot to look for seals, dolphins and migrating whales. Tracing a path through bushland and remote beaches, you can stop for a spot of fishing along the way. Rare ground parrots and striated field wrens can also be seen from time to time around the forested areas. In spring, the area blooms with wildflowers. Green Cape is an ideal start or end point on the Great Light to Light walk, which continues all the way north to Boyds Tower.

Located approximately 2 km from Mataranka in the Katherine region, Bitter Springs is a natural thermal spring set among palms and tropical woodlands in Elsey National Park. These spring-fed pools are a perfect place to relax and unwind after a long drive or a day of exploring. A 500 m loop walk offers a short and scenic way to enjoy the area on foot. Access is via a short, paved path from the carpark, with stairs and handrails leading into the water. Good access for wheelchairs but would require assistance getting in and out of the water. Bitter Springs is closed during the rainy season (typically November to May) due to flooding. Please check ahead for current access conditions before planning your visit. Purchase an NT Parks Visitor Pass before you arrive. NT residents are exempt.

Bivouac Bay is one of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks. The 60 Great Short Walks offer the best of Tasmania's day walking opportunities. 4 hours return, 10km return. Grade 3. A delightfully varied coastal walk that feels remote but is quite accessible. Starting on the tranquil sands of Fortescue Bay, the walk climbs to a modest clifftop, then undulates through light bush and forest. You’re never far from the water, and are sure to see sea birds, and perhaps even seals, dolphins or whales in the bay. At Canoe Bay, a bit over halfway to Bivouac Bay, keep an eye out for the rusting metal of the sunken dredge William Pitt. From Canoe Bay the track follows the unique coastline before a moderately steep climb into Bivouac Bay. After reaching Bivouac Bay, you have the option to camp at Bivouac Bay campground or return on the same track back to Fortescue Bay. Bjelke-Petersen Dam, also known as Lake Barambah or BP Dam, is just 15 kilometres from Murgon, at Moffatdale in the South Burnett. It is a popular and well-equipped area for recreational freshwater fishing, birdwatching, boating, picnicking and camping/caravanning. Picnic areas, barbecues, a general store, a caravan and recreation park and a boat ramp with a large car park make this the ideal place to relax for a day or extended stay. Bjelke-Petersen Dam covers 2,500 hectares and holds 1,450,000 megalitres of water, which is used for irrigation and water supply to Murgon and Cherbourg's towns. Koalas, wallabies and kangaroos can be seen around the lake, while the birdlife includes black swans, ducks, pelicans and cormorants. Bjelke-Petersen Dam is a popular freshwater fishing spot. A stocked impound permit is required to fish. The dam is routinely stocked with Golden Perch (or Yellowbelly), Australian Bass and Silver Perch, and you can also catch red claw (no permit required). Yallakool Camping and Recreation Park offer several accommodation options from powered and unpowered campsites to cabins and villas.
