Be inspired by Maryborough’s growing tourist attraction and walk the Mural Trail, telling the quirky and serious stories of the city’s colourful past from the time when it was Queensland’s major industrial city building naval ships, sugar mills and railway rolling stock.
Launched in 2015, the trail now has 37 large scale murals and installations adorning buildings in the city’s Central Business District.
Start your journey in Kent Street at the Maryborough Visitor Information Centre in City Hall and collect a trail map and while there learn about the baking of the historic Peace Cake and how the trail began.
The map shows the location of each mural and installation and makes suggestions on how the two kilometres trail over 10 city blocks can be walked in separate sections if distance and mobility is a concern, or in one continuous journey of discovery.
Staff at the visitor centre will point out the many coffee and speciality shops, parks and places to relax along the way, making this one of Maryborough’s unique experiences.

In its long life, the Mechanics Institute has operated intermittently as a cinema for irregular screenings over the years, among other uses.
Earlier records however state that the Howlong School of Arts was built by Mr W. Squires and opened on 21 October 1887. It can only be concluded that the façade of the building was added in 1895 by contractor Mr. William Murdock and the supper room built in 1936.
The building is now the Howlong Opportunity Shop.
This is just one of the prime examples of Federation-era architecture that occupies the streets of Howlong. How long, like many other towns and villages north of the Murray, is rich with history and was central to the development of modern Australia.

The Mint consists of two structures – the Mint offices and the coining factory – located in the most important civic precinct of Sydney. The Mint offices building on Macquarie Street has been a major element in the streetscape of Sydney for almost 200 years: the coining factory, hidden from view, is less well known. Both these buildings are associated with major events in the history of New South Wales and are of exceptional heritage significance.
The Mint offices were constructed between 1811 and 1816 as the south wing of the General Hospital and are one of the oldest surviving buildings in central Sydney. It is also the earliest example of classical architectural detailing in Australia and contains much evidence of colonial building techniques from the convict period.
The coining factory represents a major event in the social, economic and political history of New South Wales – the discovery of gold. Built in 1854–1855 in response to the gold rush, the buildings were constructed using imported prefabricated components and are rich in evidence of minting processes and machinery.
Explore the rooms and hallways where colonial surgeons and apothecaries once lived and examine the archaeological remains of the Mint in the courtyard and rear buildings, reminders of the busy industrial complex that operated here for many decades.
The Armidale Pool (Monckton Aquatic Centre) is a great place to swim a few laps in an outdoor heated pool but also a fantastic place for a picnic and a swim with young kids.
The complex has a lot of shady spots under trees or shade sails, and a number of picnic tables for lunch. Great spot for birthday parties, family picnics or family gatherings while kids go nuts in the water. Great large grassy areas and lots of space to spread out and relax.
There are two kids' pools: one for toddlers and one for preschool-age kids. As well as this there are two 50-metre pools, one for lap swimming, and one for bigger kids to swim in. The big pools are fenced off so little kids can't wander off and find their way into the big pools.
There's a canteen for food, cold drinks and ice cream, but you can also bring your own lunches.
The Monkton Aquatic Centre Armidale is a great way to spend a hot day with a young family or group of families.
