East Tamar Landcare decided to give something more to the community with the development of the Reg Yates Memorial Interpretation Centre and a 180-metre boardwalk along with a unique patch of old remnant riparian vegetation.
The boardwalk allows visitors to immerse themselves in the natural habitat, which is home to many rare plants and perhaps see a platypus or trout.
Walk along Yamba's Pippi Beach, northern NSW, at low tide and you're still likely to see the odd shellfish of the same name, but not nearly as many as there were before sand mining and overharvesting in the mid-1900s.
The Pippis may have thinned out, but the beach that bears the name remains a Yamba institution, for this is the beach to turn to when the warmer months spring up.
Pippi Beach lies on the southern exposed side of Yamba's beachfront. As a result, it cops the brunt of any southern swells marching up the coast and can be unpredictable, with strong currents and shifting conditions. The northern end of the beach is patrolled during summer holidays. It's advised to swim between the flags where lifeguards are on watch.
Pippi Beach features picnic tables, parking and toilet facilities.
Southern Pippi Beach – down towards Flat Rock is a leash free-area for dogs, and is a beloved morning walk routine for Yamba residents of the two-and four-legged variety.
Designed to take advantage of the steep slopes, the terraced woodland garden of Pirianda contains a unique collection of plants, including many botanically important trees, unusual shrubs and perennials.
Featuring beautiful spring displays, Pirianda Garden is best known for its autumn colours and tree collection, including 28 different types of maples and 13 birch varieties.
With magnificent views and a backdrop of ever-changing colours, photographers and bird watchers are in for a treat, while the lawns are perfect for spreading out with a picnic feast.
Meander through the tranquil garden at your leisure, making your way from the grassy areas, through the terraces, and down to peaceful fern gullies beneath towering blackwoods and mountain ash.
Pirianda Garden is open 10:00 am to 5:00 pm every day except Christmas Day, days of Total Fire Ban, Severe Weather events and major works.
Conditions can change in parks for many reasons. Before your visit, please check the relevant park page on the Parks Victoria website for updated changes of conditions and familiarise yourself with important bushfire safety information to ensure your experience is safe and enjoyable. For information about fires, Fire Danger Ratings and Total Fire Bans visit www.emergency.vic.gov.au
Pirrama Park, formerly known as Pyrmont Point Park, is situated right on the harbour and offers expansive water views. Looking over to the Harbour Bridge and North Sydney, it is the perfect spot for watching the fireworks exploding across Sydney on New Year's Eve.
Along with a children's playground with water play features, there are barbecues, shade structures, grassed areas, a boardwalk and toilet facilities. This makes it a park perfect for a family or group of friends looking to relax and enjoy a picnic.
In the morning and evening, the boardwalk comes alive with walkers and joggers as well as groups participating in boot camp and yoga.
Pirrama Park's award-winning design incorporates elements of sustainable design including native plantings, solar panels and the use of recycled materials. Sandstone artefacts within the interactive playground reflect former quarries and the promenade marks the original shoreline.
The lakeside boardwalk on Pirrita Island showcases the unique landscape and heritage of Swansea foreshore.
The 250-metre boardwalk crosses Pirrita Island's mangroves and looks out over the turquoise waters of Swansea Channel.
'Pirrita' is the Awabakal word for oysters from the mangroves, while Miners Point references the coal mining families who lived on the island throughout the 1900s.
Interpretive signage has been installed along the boardwalk, showcasing the heritage of the area, as well as the unique flora and fauna that call the island home.
As well as this new edition, the existing car park on the western side of Pirrita Island has been upgraded to improve access. A new outdoor fitness trail has also been installed along Channel Street between Swansea Swim Centre and Thomas Humphreys Reserve.
The Pise House (Mud Hut) was built in 1896 by Mary Brodie who came to the district in the mid-1880s with her husband. After he died suddenly, she purchased the Royal Hotel and by 1890, she was effectively running the town of Bedourie, listed as the local butcher, postmistress, storekeeper, wine and spirit merchant and licensee of the Royal Hotel.
Mary soon remarried and when her second husband died from Bright's Disease, she inherited enough money to build the Pise House (Mud Hut). This house was built of rammed earth and mud collected from Eyre Creek. The only other buildings from that time still standing are the Royal Hotel, across the road, and the Indigenous Trackers Hut, which now stands behind. It is a rare surviving example in the region of this type of construction.
At the end of the 1800s, Pise House (Mud Hut) passed into the possession of Sir Sidney Kidman - the Cattle King.
Pise House (Mud Hut) was purchased by Diamantina Shire Council in 2001 from Jean Smith and has since been fully restored with most of the original timber replaced.
The Pithi Kawi Bush Food Garden is a natural outdoor space for the local community and visitors to enjoy. The walking trail takes you along the Pinkerton Creek that runs through the town of Quorn and then back around to join up as a loop walking trail approx 2km in distance.
Enjoy wandering through the garden and learning about all the uses of the native plants using the interprative signage.
