For a tantalising taste of outback NSW, load up the van or 4WD and revel in the wide open spaces along Jump-Up Loop Road drive, in Sturt National Park. Starting at Tibooburra, it’s a 110km self-guided round trip to Olive Downs and back, via Silver City Highway.
It’s an exhilarating drive that takes in a variety of distinct landscapes typical of Wangkumara country – from the distinctive granite tors near Tibooburra, to the rolling downs and gibber plains, before reaching the iconic Jump-Ups to the north.
There’s plenty to experience along the way, including spectacular birdwatching from the bird hides at Mount King Tank and South Myers Tank. Stretch your legs along Jump-Up walking track and soak in the vast desert views, or check out the historic remains of Mount King Station. If you’re tempted to experience an outback sunset, pitch your tent or park the van at Olive Downs campground.
Take a walk among the Jump-Up landscape of Sturt National Park; striking flat-topped mesas that are the remains of an ancient mountain range.
As you walk, you’ll have a good view of the surrounding plains, predominantly covered with mulga bushland; however you might be lucky enough to see a carpet of wildflowers following heavy rains. Further away, you’ll be able to see the low-lying gibber plains.
Keep your eyes open for wallaroos, kangaroos, lizards and eagles as you walk and be sure to look out for rock engravings, middens and scarred trees along the way; evidence of the Wangkumara people’s long connection to this ancient landscape.

The junction sandbar is where a large number of Traditional Owners, armed with spears and weapons, threatened Captain Sturt as he sailed down the Murray on his expedition to find the inland sea. When officially opened in September 1947, the New South Wales Government Railways claimed it was the "largest roundhouse in the southern hemisphere".
The Junee Roundhouse, or loco, as it was called, was the last steam depot built in New South Wales and, as such, was the pinnacle of steam depot development in the state. Steam soon gave way to diesel power, and the Junee loco was accordingly modified and steam facilities removed.
The main feature, the roundhouse, remains. Centred around the unique 100-foot (33 metre) turntable are two sheds and 42 tracks, including the high roads and machine shop. Today, the roundhouse is home to Junee Railway Workshop, a local company that maintains and repairs rolling stock and locomotives for hire and for other operators. Other parts of the roundhouse are occupied by the Regional Heritage Transport Association Junee - Inc., which operates a museum dedicated to local railway history on the site.
In October 2022 the Roundhouse celebrated its 75th anniversary.
