Is it an alien artefact ? A remnant of an ancient civilisation ? No, it's art Jim. It is a shiny steel monolith, stamped with words that attempt to conjure the better parts of human nature, tokens of the continuing search for passion, and bubbles that represent the effort to succeed in life.
A machine for inspiration. The sculpture is the work of George Town artists Mark Hoban, Bruno Barcodi and the late PeterHjort.
The International Flag Display (the Display) in Canberra's Parliamentary Zone colorfully acknowledges the international presence in Australia's National Capital.
Originally launched in 1999, by the Governor General, the Hon Sir William Deane, the display has become an important attraction for tourists and locals alike.
The Display consists of 110 flags in total, representing 108 Missions that have a diplomatic presence as well as flags for the European Union and the United Nations.
The award-winning International Rose Garden takes visitors on a heady journey that's a delight to the senses.
As you wander around the garden you're drawn through a series of colourful, fragrant spaces, each cleverly revealing a rose collection from a different style of garden.
The overall structure and geometry includes a sunken garden, a circular garden and several pergolas, in perfect visual counterpoint to the adjacent glass conservatory.
The garden displays over 2,700 roses and more than 350 rose cultivars, while mixed companion plantings add lots of vivid seasonal colour.
There are areas devoted to Australian bred roses, single roses, heritage roses and pillar roses and much more.
As you saunter under a tunnel of climbing rose arches, you will find a beautiful display of roses selected for specific Australian causes (e.g. the Leukaemia Foundation).
The garden is also home to the National Rose Trial Garden, which tests roses not yet commercially available in Australia.
In October 2022, the World Federation of Rose Societies gave it an Award of Garden Excellence, a title enjoyed by just four other gardens in Australia.
View it at its best in October-November when the first flush of the season is in full bloom, and again in April for the autumn flush. Visit any time throughout summer and you will be treated to a beautiful experience too.

Nestled in the heart of the historic gold rush town of Gulgong, Intuition Music School & Goodies Gulgong is a unique creative space where music, art, history and community come together under one roof. Housed within a heritage building completed in 1910, standing on foundations connected to Gulgong's early gold rush era of the 1870s, our space carries stories from generations past while continuing to inspire new ones today.
Founded from a deep love of music, creativity and human connection, Intuition Music School has grown into far more than a music school. Alongside private music lessons and workshops, we regularly present intimate concerts, recital events and art exhibitions that bring both locals and visitors together in meaningful and memorable ways.
Within the same space, Goodies Gulgong offers a carefully curated gift shop filled with unique treasures, artisan gifts, beautiful books, music-inspired finds, homewares, teas and thoughtful keepsakes. Visitors often describe stepping through our doors as discovering a hidden gem — a peaceful and inspiring place to slow down, browse, listen and connect.
Whether you are visiting Gulgong for its rich history, artistic spirit or country charm, Intuition Music School & Goodies Gulgong invites you to experience creativity, culture and warm hospitality in one of the town's most distinctive heritage spaces.
Inverawe Native Gardens is located at Margate and at 9.5 hectare is the largest landscaped native Australian garden in Tasmania. It overlooks North-West Bay, with views down to North Bruny Island and back to Kunanyi/Mt Wellington. The garden is an experience, showcasing Australian plants in a landscaped setting.
Inverawe features thousands of trees and colourful shrubs. There is always something in bloom. Kilometres of formed paths and many seats take advantage of the views.
Visitors are met and introduced to the garden, given a coloured map and are free to wander. The Tea Terrace offers tea, coffee, and light refreshments.
110 bird species have been seen at Inverawe, including all 12 of Tasmania’s endemics. Poetry, whimsy, and explanatory signs enhance the experience. French explorers and early botanists were in the area, 220 years ago. Some of the plant species they named are in the collection.
Inverawe Native Gardens is 15 minutes south of Hobart, on the Channel Highway. It is located next to the Margate Train. There is ample parking. Guided tours can be arranged.
The Bicentennial memorial illustrates the community spirit of the individuals and organisations who volunteered their time, technical skills, labour and much of the material to create a permanent memorial depicting the history and progressive development of the Inverell district prior to 1988.
It features three courtyards, each containing 14 sculptured bas-relief panels, with a central connecting courtyard.
Courtyard One depicts pre-1788 when the Inverell District was home to the Anaiwan, Bigambul, Jukambal, Kwiambal and Weraerai First Nations people.
Courtyard Two spans 1788-1888, the first century of white occupation in Australia, and the settlement and development of the Inverell District.
Courtyard Three depicts the social and technological changes that occurred from 1888 to 1988, including the use of the district's resources and the growth of the town.
A tile mosaic map depicting Alan Cunningham's travels through the area is at the Bicentennial Memorial's centre.
The bas-relief plaques are arranged in pairs in the form of open books, which are intended to be viewed in progression from the pre 1788 courtyard to create the impression of a walk through history. The last plaque in the series, with hands and fore arms linked, signifies unity and working together and the Spire symbolises strength, the light which shines upward through the spire shows the way to the future.
The Inverell Art Gallery is a community gallery run by a Manager and the Inverell Art Society. The Collective Gift Store sells unique and beautiful contemporary 2D and 3D art, handcrafted glassware, ceramics, woodwork, and fibre and textiles.
The Gallery is housed within two unique heritage buildings, the old School of Arts building built in 1906, and Butler Hall, built in 1909. The buildings were combined in 1995 to accommodate a fast-growing Art Gallery.
Aunt Elizabeth Connors mural was commissioned by the Inverell Shire Council I 2021. Aunt Elizabeth was a family matriarch and instrumental in forging strong relationships with many groups in the community especially those devoted to reconciliation. Artist Claire Foxton was inspired by the granite rock formations for the background and endemic species incorporated into Aunt Elizabeth’s dress.
The "Meandering Macintyre" footpath mosaic is located outside the Art Gallery. The mosaic was constructed on 90 x 120-centimetre panels joined to form a 94-metre-long path, which depicts native Australian wildflower, indigenous birds, insects, fish, animals, and reptiles, and represents the flow of the Macintyre River, which flows through Inverell.
The Inverell Art Gallery’s major exhibition The Inverell Art Prize, a competitive exhibition, is held in October each year with the Contemporary Art Exhibition, a curated exhibition, held in May. The Inverell Photography Exhibition is held biannually.
The course at the Inverell Golf Club is an interesting fully watered course with excellent greens and tree-lined fairways. Dive or drive to discover the shipwrecks of the Investigator Strait Shipwreck Trail on the beautiful Yorke Peninsula. Start at Edithburgh and follow the trail of interpretive signs around the coast to Innes National Park.
Enjoy the rugged coastline, cliffs and sandy beaches. The wrecks are home to many fish and sea creatures. Some of these are found nowhere else in the world. The sites are suitable for both experienced and novice divers.
Captain Mathew Flinders named the Strait in 1802 after his ship HMS Investigator. He was on a voyage to map the southern coasts, braving many hardships and dangers.
From 1849 to 1982, 26 vessels were wrecked in these rough seas, and more than 70 sailors lost their lives.
The S.S. Clan Ranald forms part of this trail and is the only turret ship to be lost in Australian waters. The hull lies upside down and makes an impressive sight. It has been declared an historic shipwreck under the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976. You can also visit the graveyard of the sailors.
You can download more details from the website including a map.
Visitors can discover the stories behind the people, places and events that have helped shape NSW - where the history happened. A Blue Plaque visit offers more than sightseeing. It creates a direct connection between place and story, turning everyday locations into places of discovery. Each plaque reveals a unique piece of history, encouraging visitors to explore local areas from a new perspective and uncover stories they may never have known.
This blue plaque commemorates brothers Ioannis (Jack) and Antonios (Tony) Notaras, Greek migrants who became highly successful restaurateurs and built Grafton's best-known theatre and cinema, the Saraton.
