Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden is a remarkable private garden with a 40+ year history, built and operated by volunteers in the northwest of Tasmania.
The 11-hectare property is located just 8km south of Burnie off the Ridgley Highway, and features over 24,000 select rhododendrons and companion plants from around the world. A spectacular display of blooms can be seen between late August and November, and striking Autumn foliage colours from March to May.
The tranquillity of this lush environment can be enjoyed year-round, with three pristine mirror-like lakes and expansive views from the strategically placed pavilions. The birdsong from diverse bird life and encounters with native fauna such as platypus and echidna are another unique aspect.
In addition to the unique hybrid rhododendrons cultivated by the members, they conserve many wild species of rhododendrons growing in geographically defined areas of the garden, which reflect the plant's origins - from Asia, across the Himalayas to China, Japan and North America.
The newly renovated Licensed Cafe provides meals and refreshments, with BYO picnics being welcome.
Emungalan Cemetery contains only four known graves. Three of these are marked with a simple wooden stake; however no information is given as to which graves belong to whom. A photo dating from c.1970s shows that there were once four wooden grave markers. A metal sign provides the names and approximate date of death of the people buried there. A metal piping fence surrounds the graves and covers an area approximately 12.9 x 4.2 metres. The fence was erected in 1994 by local resident Wally Christie and members of the Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade.
The Wheel Rim Shrinkage Pit was constructed in about 1917 adjacent to the blacksmith's shop in the township of Emungalan on the northern side of the Katherine River.
The Wheel Rim Shrinkage Pit was a crude forge used by a blacksmith to heat and expand iron tyres prior to them being fitted to wooden wagon wheels. Once fitted, the iron tyre was quenched with water thus shrinking it and forming a tight fit around the wheel. The Wheel Rim Shrinkage Pit marks the spot where the township of Emungalan developed as a result of the extension of the North Australia Railway from Pine Creek to the northern side of the Katherine River.
The pit is one of a few items of physical evidence of the town's existence. It is a tangible reminder of the role wagons, drays and buggies played in the early exploration and settlement of the Territory and is a direct link to our early transport system.
Enanty Barn is the oldest historical building in the area. It was built in 1870 for shelter and storage for shepherds. Once a year shepherds would walk their stock for the annual walk and shear. The location of the building was important because it was close to the Lockier River.
In 1994 the building was partly restored as part of Mingenew’s Centennial year. It is also known for being one of the “things to see”. The barn has attracted a number of visitors and those with self-contained vehicles may stay on the premises. Interestingly, this little barn is also one of the most recommended sites for camping under the stars.
You will fall in love with historical buildings like this. It leaves one wondering who stayed in it so many years ago. As you peered through open windows and doors, you could not help but feel a cold eerie chill.
Enanty Barn can be found on Mingenew-Morawa Rd Mingenew. It is about three kilometres from Mingenew. Enanty Barn is the perfect place to base yourself as you explore the region to take in the amazing night skies.
Although you can imagine how beautiful it would be during the rest of the year with splendid views of surrounding fields, the best time to visit this little piece of history is during wildflower season.

Little fairies and pixies can experience a fantastical family outing at the Enchanted Hut in the Memorial Park in Howlong.
The hut's exterior is an illusion of a shelter made up of old woven whimsical trees, green foliage and flowers with a fairy's wings peeking out from the centre.
As children enter the hut, they are taken into a magical world of magical creatures, including mystical fairies, naiads and goblins, surprises that appear like they crawled right from the Murray River and enchanted mushrooms that provoke imaginations and encourage creative play.
A place where children and adults alike can sit quietly and enjoy not only the artwork, but the magnificent backdrop of the Murray River flowing peacefully by.

20 minute circuit, 1.1km circuit. Grade 2.
This is a delightful short walk that provides a taste of Cradle Mountain and is suitable for all ages. It starts near the bridge crossing Pencil Pine Creek and meanders through magical, mossy forest, along a cascading creek. Keep an eye out for colourful fungi, especially during the coldest months.
You might also see pademelons and wombats on the edges of the forest (please don't feed or touch any animals—for their safety and yours and stay at least 2m away). A tunnel that mimics a wombat burrow has been built along the track and is a magnet for children.
Please refer to the Parks and Wildlife Service Tasmania website (parks.tas.gov.au) for up-to-date information about this walk, alerts, closures, safe walking guidelines, leave no trace principles and National Park entry fees where applicable.
