Discover the hidden stories of Heritage Hill in The Secret Life of Gardens, an exhibition exploring how gardens have shaped Australian life for more than a century. From the establishment of Laurel Lodge in 1870 to the City of Greater Dandenong's purchase of Benga in 1985, the gardens at Heritage Hill reveal how people once lived, what they valued, and how their relationship with nature evolved.
The exhibition traces the transformation of the site's historic gardens, including Benga's original layout and the influence of renowned designer Edna Walling, with a rare glimpse into the property's pet cemetery. It highlights the importance of home gardens before supermarkets, the role of food preservation and beekeeping, and the many garden types that supported daily life.
Holiday periods may affect opening hours. Visitors are encouraged to check current opening hours before their visit.
Experience the stories that grow in the garden.

Acclaimed choreographer Annalouise Paul makes her contemporary art debut at Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre, drawing on more than fifteen years of research through her interdisciplinary project Mother Tongue®.
At its heart is Primordial (2026), a newly commissioned dance film presented within a spiral-shaped architectural installation. As audiences move through the work, shifting perspectives reveal an unfolding choreography of movement, sound, image and space.
For Paul, dance is a mother tongue. Through movement, rhythm, geometry and technology, Uncharted Waters. The Journey of Mother Tongue explores the languages that shape how people relate to one another and the world around them. Drawing on the geometric forms of the grid, triangle and spiral, the exhibition reflects on different ways of understanding our place within social, cultural and natural environments.
Inviting audiences to enter the spiral rather than observe from a distance, Uncharted Waters. The Journey of Mother Tongue blurs the boundaries between choreography, architecture and participation, creating an immersive experience to be watched, walked and felt.
Presented by Greater Dandenong City Council.

NGV presents the first-ever major solo exhibition of South Sudanese, Melbourne-based contemporary artist Atong Atem, who is celebrated for her dynamic and vibrant photographic self-portraits that explore identity, mythmaking and intergenerational storytelling.
Transforming herself through textiles, paint, costume and symbolic objects, Atem uses her own body as a vessel to explore themes of race, gender and colonialism, as well as the beauty and resilience of her Dinka Bor culture and Melbourne's African diaspora. The exhibition showcases how Atem uses photography as a medium for celebration and reclamation, and how her practice interrogates how identity is performed, both in everyday life and before the camera, creating images in which history, memory and imagination intertwine.
