The October play reading is 'Pinter's Son, Jim' the only completed full-length play written by the iconic Australian author and bush poet Henry Lawson.
Lawson wrote the play while living in New Zealand around 1893–1894, after it was commissioned by theatrical entrepreneur Bland Holt. However, it was ultimately deemed too unwieldy or difficult to stage at the time. It blends a love story, a detective story, slapstick comedy, and tragedy all into one narrative. The story features some of Lawson's best-loved recurring outback characters, most notably the irrepressible wanderer Mitchell.
Four men take to the stage in Untrained. Two are highly skilled, experienced dancers. Two have no movement training at all.
The complex, refined movements that one man executes with ease can only be approximated by another. All are given the same instructions, but how they execute them reveals a portrait of each man's character. The evolution of these actions invites an unavoidable and sometimes humorous comparison between them and examines how their physical histories set them apart.
Two Ballarat locals with zero movement training are bravely stepping up for something extraordinary, a full hour of live dance performance. Raw and untested, this is a bold, brave challenge that few would undertake.
Come along and show your support for these hometown heroes as they push themselves beyond their comfort zones and put their best foot forward.
UNTRAINED is a Regional Exclusive at Her Majesty's Theatre Ballarat
