About this place

What to expect

Step back in time 170 years and experience the rich heritage and colonial history of our property, where the Burton family have lived for six generations. The story begins when James Burton (1793) was transported as a convict to Sydney Cove in 1816 aboard the "Atlas III". In 1828 he and his wife Elizabeth received a Free Settler's Land Grant at O'Connell Plains NSW and reared 6 children. In 1856, their eldest son, James and his wife, Mary, purchased our property, which is located very close to his parents' land grant property. James and Mary built their family home and reared ten children. The Convict's Great Great Grandson Geoff Burton now lives on the property and he and his wife Marie Louise are working to keep the Burton family history alive. The original slab hut Burton family home has been restored and presented in a way that represents the way of life in 1856. There is an impressive display of family artefacts and vintage farm machinery on display. Geoff has built a memorial garden to honour the life and legacy of the six generations of Burtons who have lived here at O'Connell NSW. Historic Farm Tours are run on a Saturday morning from 10.30am. Everyone is welcome.
