Joe Furlonger: Horizons

Fri, 11 Dec, 10:00 am AEST

Caloundra · Free admission

Drawn from the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Collection, Joe Furlonger: Horizons surveys the celebrated Queensland artist's career across painting, ceramics, sculpture and drawing. Works from Caloundra Regional Gallery's collection are also included, providing further insight into the breadth of Furlonger's practice. Born in Cairns in 1952 and raised in the Samford Valley near Brisbane, Furlonger developed a deep connection to the Australian landscape through his experiences working on farms and fishing trawlers. After studying under leading artists, including Roy Churcher, and attending the Queensland College of Art, he established drawing as a lifelong daily practice and the foundation of his creative process. Furlonger gained national recognition in 1987 when his large-scale painting Bathers won the prestigious Moët & Chandon Fellowship, leading to a residency in France and helping shape the direction of his artistic career. Across more than four decades, recurring themes of the human figure, land and seascapes have defined his work. Characterised by expressive line, spontaneity and an enduring curiosity about the world, Furlonger's art captures both the energy and beauty of everyday life and the Australian environment. Curated by Michael Hawker, former Curator, Australian Art to 1980 at QAGOMA, Joe Furlonger: Horizons was originally presented at QAGOMA from August 2022 to January 2023. (190 words)

Carols on Kings proudly presented by Caloundra RSL

Sat, 12 Dec, 4:00 pm AEST

Kings Beach · Free admission

Proudly presented by Caloundra RSL at Kings Beach Amphitheatre, Caloundra. Christmas in Caloundra sounds like a few thousand people singing slightly out of tune while the light goes off the water. Carols on Kings brings the community together for an evening of carols, live performances and food under a summer sky. It's the kind of Christmas that only makes sense on the Sunshine Coast. The stage program runs into the evening with local performers, familiar carols and the sort of atmosphere only found outdoors in December. A picnic rug is recommended, along with arriving early and staying for the singing after dark. Food trucks will be on site through the evening, so dinner is sorted. Carols on Kings is presented by Caloundra RSL, who will be on site with a marquee and cold water for anyone who needs it, and delivered by the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce with support from Sunshine Coast Council and the Office of Kendall Hatcher MP. What's on: live carols and performances from local artists. Santa will be in attendance. Food trucks on site. Caloundra RSL community marquee with free water. Know before you go: entry is free. Bring a picnic rug, something warm for later, and a singing voice.
