Bongaree is the best family-friendly beach on Bribie Island, with its gentle waves, shallow waters and parklands that run parallel to the water along Welsby Parade. There are plenty of picnic shelters, tables and barbecues for visitors wanting to have a family picnic or catch up with friends. Being a popular destination, it’s best to get in early and reserve your spot, particularly on sunny weekends.
The beach is also home to a jetty, great for fishing or bomb-diving into the water (safely, of course). The gentle waves make this beach a popular kayaking and stand-up-paddle-boarding location, or just a fun spot for the kids to run around and play or build sandcastles from the beautiful white sand.
Aside from the picnic areas, Bongaree Beach has several cafes, takeaway shops, a grocery store and an ice-cream shop all within walking distance.
Sound like the area you want to explore? Bribie Island Hire Hut has electric bikes, stand-up boards, kayaks, water bikes and more!
Since Matthew Flinders and his crew landed on Bribie Island in 1799, the landscape has changed significantly. To remember the good old days and discover the history of the only sand island connected to the mainland, take a walk along the Bongaree Walkabout. Starting and ending at the Bongaree Jetty, the path takes visitors around the foreshore area where historical landmarks and buildings can be discovered.
The Bongaree Walkabout tour takes about one hour to complete, but an idle stroll will take longer, particularly if you like to stop and take photos of the beautiful view. The Bongaree Jetty is surrounded by parkland, so it’s a perfect chance to grab a picnic (or visit one of the nearby eating options) and make a day of it with the family.
Walk into a wonderland of flying butterflies! Around 700-1000 butterflies are housed in an outdoor sanctuary where they are safe to fly, feed, breed, lay their eggs and continue their magical life cycle which you can explore up close and personal.
At the butterfly breeding lab viewing area you can see the volunteers at work, looking after the eggs and chrysalises and feeding the hungry caterpillars.
Wonder through the tunnel and watch a short video capturing the life cycle of a Monarch butterfly, then emerge into the magical, flower-filled butterfly sanctuary where you can see hundreds of butterflies flying on any day.
Tip: Wear bright colours and have your camera ready when a butterfly lands on you.
Bribie Island Butterfly House is a not-for-profit community of passionate volunteers sharing their knowledge and experience on butterfly-attracting plants and how to care for butterflies.
Bribie Island Butterfly House is 100 per cent run by volunteers, and 100 per cent of surplus funds are donated to charities.
The Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology is situated in Caboolture, an hour north of Brisbane. It has one of the finest collections of European and Classical artefacts open to the public in Australia. The collection covers over a million years of world history and endeavours to educate and inspire through its displays and public programs. The Museum's collection includes prehistoric artefacts, ceramics, glass, stained glass, metalwork, woodwork, lacquer, sculptures, manuscripts and rare books, Renaissance and Baroque paintings, watercolours, icons and frescos.
The annual Abbey Medieval Festival – which is a vital fund raiser for the Museum - brings to life the colour, pageantry and excitement of Medieval Europe. Medieval re-enactors, musicians and street performers from across Australia and overseas join in a vibrant display of life in the Middle Ages. This tells just one of the stories of the Abbey Museum collection, but they have many stories to tell.
Opened in February 2025, the Museum now has an Art Gallery, with an exhibition "Inspired Images: The Art of Faiths", which explores human history through works inspired by diverse spiritual beliefs. The collection includes medieval, renaissance and baroque paintings and sculptures, ceramics, stained glass, and works on paper.
Guests are now welcome to enjoy a coffee and light refreshment at the Abbey Cafe.
