About this event

What to expect

Bayberry Picking Season at Pude Natural Farm in Silvan invites visitors to pick and eat bayberries under the tree at what is believed to be the only pick-your-own bayberry farm in Australia. A family took over the orchard after it had been left untended for several years and has been bringing it back one tree at a time.

Bayberries are a small, round summer fruit with no skin, deep red to almost black when fully ripe, with a juicy sweet and tart flavour. They are at their best for only a few days and do not travel well, which is why the orchard opens for picking. The trees are grown without chemical sprays or synthetic fertilisers, fed with sheep manure and compost made on the farm, and pollinated by the wind and the farm's own bees.

Picking and eating in the orchard is included in the ticket, and bayberries to take home are weighed and paid for on the way out. The season runs for about a month each summer, with exact dates set by the ripening fruit. Sessions must be booked online in advance and children are welcome. Closed shoes, long pants, a hat and water are recommended.
